On 21th of January, the Middle School witnessed the Inter-House Debate for the students of Std VIII. The distinguished judges included Mrs. Edith, Senior English teacher from St. John’s high school and Mrs. Preethi, who is the Head of Department for English at the Cathedral School. The moderators included two of our own dedicated staff Mrs. Kasturi and Mrs. Preethi from the French department .
The topic for this year’s debate was ‘Should age restriction be imposed on Social Media?’, which is very relevant to the current generations given the number of cyber-crimes occurring, emphasizing on the need to educate children about both sides of using social media.
The participants eloquently articulated both for and against the topic in the most persuasive, diplomatic manner highlighting about social anxiety among young users due to social media while also underscoring the importance of exposure of the youth to social media by using content filtering algorithms to fact check the information being circulated. The participants displayed a truly aggressive support for their houses through their impactful speeches and intellectual rebuttals.
Ameya Karaba of Pakenham Walsh house was adjudged as the Best Speaker underscoring his lucidness and diplomatic acumen among his batch mates. The fourth place it was Pope house, third place Elphick house with Thomas house taking the second spot and a tie for the first spot between Pakenham Walsh and Pettigrew houses.
A commendable performance indeed!
