“We should not teach children the Sciences, but give them a taste for them.” – Rousseau
In the spirit of this profound insight, a DNA Science Workshop was conducted at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School on Tuesday, 29th July 2025, for the students of ISC Classes 11 and 12, specializing in Biology and Biotechnology.
The workshop was held in the ISC Biology Laboratory and was led by Dr. V.K. Singh, a renowned expert in molecular biology and a representative of the India DNA Workshop initiative. It was attended by 45 students from the Biology and Biotechnology streams.
The primary objective of the workshop was to provide students with hands-on training in fundamental biochemical techniques and to deepen their practical understanding of molecular biology.
Students had the opportunity to extract DNA from various biological samples such as plant cells, chicken blood cells, and even their own saliva and hair roots. They were guided through each step of the process, learning the intricacies of laboratory protocols, safety measures, and maintaining a contamination-free environment.
A key highlight of the workshop was a session on DNA fingerprinting, where students were introduced to the technique of Gel Electrophoresis, along with DNA photography and analysis of gel images.
The session concluded with a presentation by Dr. V.K. Singh on the significance of DNA fingerprinting and its applications in forensic science, medical diagnostics, and genetic research.
The workshop offered valuable experiential learning, effectively complementing the academic curriculum and sparking deeper scientific inquiry among students.
The Department of Biology and Biotechnology extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. V.K. Singh and the India DNA Workshop team for conducting an engaging and enlightening session. We are also deeply thankful to our Principal, Mr. Alistair R. A. Freese, for his constant encouragement in organizing such enriching opportunities for our students.
May such initiatives continue to ignite curiosity and inspire the scientists of tomorrow.
