On 7th August, the Middle School Section hosted the much-anticipated Inter-House Debate for Grade 8.

The distinguished panel of judges comprised Ms. Sherri Anne Bird, an accomplished educator and communication skills expert at Clarence High School with over 22 years of experience in academic and corporate training; Mrs. Caroline Priyanka, an English literature and pedagogy specialist at Frank Anthony Public School, with prior experience at St Joseph’s School and a Christian publishing house; and Mrs. Shalini Angel, an alumna of The Cathedral High School with a decade of experience teaching English to senior students, actively engaged in debate clubs and professional workshops. The session was ably moderated by Ayush Prem of Grade 11 alongside Mrs. Sujin John from the English Department.

In keeping with tradition, the topic addressed a matter of growing social relevance — “Artificial Intelligence inhibiting students’ creative expression through writing.” The discussion offered a nuanced exploration of AI’s role in education, with participants passionately presenting arguments both for and against the motion. Proponents highlighted AI’s potential in refining literary work, while opponents raised concerns about the increasing threat of plagiarism due to algorithmic tools.

The debate was marked by eloquence, sharp reasoning, and spirited rebuttals, captivating both judges and audience alike. Chaynk Kausik of Pakenham Walsh House was declared Best Speaker, recognised for his clarity of thought and diplomatic delivery.

Pope House claimed overall victory, followed by Pakenham Walsh in second place, Thomas House in third, Pettigrew House in fourth, and Elphick House in fifth.
