Scouting was officially founded in British India in 1909, with its roots established at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, Bangalore, in the historic Old Gymnasium Building. Founded by Mr. Robert Smith Baden-Powell, a commemorative foundation stone still marks this significant event at the school.
The Bangalore Scouts and Guides (BSG) was later established in Karnataka in 1950. This year, 2024, marks its Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 75 years of service. To honour this milestone, the Scout Foundation Day was celebrated at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School on the 7th of November 2024. The event saw the participation of around 300 students from various schools across Bangalore, accompanied by 20 distinguished guests.
A special assembly was organized by the school, during which dignitaries such as Mr. P.G.R. Sindhya (State Chief Commissioner, Karnataka), Mr. Gangappa Gowda, Mr. M.A. Khalid, Mr. Radha Venkatesh, Mr. Mohan Kodajji (SOC, ASC), and Mr. M.S. Satish (District Secretary, Bangalore South) were honoured.
In the assembly, Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Rovers, and Bulbuls came together, with 150 students from Bishop Cotton Boys’ School actively participating. The day was marked by the core values of scouting—duty to God and country, honesty, integrity, and patriotism. These ideals were celebrated through scout songs and the singing of the National Anthem.
The success of the Scout Foundation Day was made possible with the steadfast support of our Principal, Mr. Alistair R.A. Freese, and Vice-Principal, Mr. Anil Dutt.
This memorable day offered a vision of good governance and social responsibility, fostering a sense of citizenship among the young Cottonians and students from across the city. It reflected the commitment of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School to scouting values, which continue to inspire the next generation of responsible citizens.
On Straight On!
